Description
Laureate Serial Input
Meters and Remote Displays accept
RS-232, RS-485, or Modbus RS-485 data from computers, programmable controllers, Laureate meters,
Laureate counters, and other devices with a serial data output. They blend in with 1/8 DIN Laureate digital panel
meters, counters and timers to provide a numeric display from -999,999 to +999,999. They can also provide
relay closures and an analog output based on the received serial data.
The display consists of six 14.2 mm (.56") high LED
digits, available in red or green. The 1/8 DIN
case is environmentally sealed to NEMA-4X from the front when panel
mounted. Worldwide input power
from 95-240 Vac ±10% is standard. Low voltage input power from 12-30 Vac or 10-48 Vdc is optional.
Choice of
Three Serial Interface Boards and Three Protocols
1. The Laureate RS-232 board features a single
6-pin RJ11 jack and is intended for point-to-point communications with a
computer, a PLC, or other device with an RS-232 port. Normally there is
only one Laureate per RS-232 line.
2.
Laureate
RS-485 boards allow multiple Laureates plus non-Laureate devices
to be connected to the same RS-485 line in parallel, multidrop fashion,
thereby
minimizing wiring. Each unit will only display the value
transmitted for its unique address. The recognition
character preceding the address is programmable.
The standard RS-485 board features two RJ11 jacks, while
the Modbus RS-485 board features two RJ45 jacks. Dual jacks allow daisy
chaining without use of a hub. Transmission distances up to one mile a
possible with RS-485, and the board at the end of the line can be
terminated by a jumper-selectable 120-ohm resistor to minimize signal
reflections. A full-duplex mode with separate wire pairs for transmit
and receive is selectable, as is a half-duplex mode with shared transmit
and receive wires. For details, please see our
Serial
Communications Manual. For impedance reasons, a
maximum of 31 Laureates can be connected the same RS-485 data line,
while only 5 Laureates can be connected to the same RS-232 line.
Three serial protocols are software selectable
for all serial interface boards: Modbus RTU, Modbus ASCII, and Laurel
ASCII. An industry-standard Modbus protocol allows devices by different
manufacturers to share the same data line, but the Laurel protocol is
simpler and is recommended when all devices on the line are Laureates.
Interface to
Laureates
All Laureate meters,
counters and timers allow the display of the sending unit to be duplicated by a remote display.
The simultaneous display of multiple
parameters using multiple remote displays is possible if the sending unit is a Laureate
counter equipped with an FR (frequency) or VF (voltage-to-frequency) signal conditioner
board. The sending unit may be set up to display any of up to four parameters: Item #1,
Item #2, Item #3 or peak. These four parameters are transmitted in sequence
in the data string, and a remote display can be set up to display any
one item from that sequence.
One possibility is to install up to three remote displays in the same
control panel as the main Laureate counter to augment its single display. For example, a
Batch Controller can show the batch total, and remote displays can show rate, peak rate,
and either grand total or number of batches. A yellow indicator light shows which item in
the transmitted sequence has been chosen for display.
Isolated Analog Output Option
A Laureate remote display can
be equipped with an optional isolated analog output
board
with 0-10 V and 4-20 mA outputs
to serve as a low-cost digital-to-analog converter. Either output can be
scaled to the displayed value. With this board, the remote display can drive a chart
recorder or serve as a highly accurate, isolated 4-20 mA transmitter.
Alarm & Setpoint Control
Options
Each Laureate remote display
can also be equipped with a relay output board
with dual contact relays or dual opto-isolated
AC/DC solid state relays to provide remote alarm and setpoint control capability.
- The relays can respond to the data values
transmitted via RS-232/485. The setpoints can be programmed locally from the front panel
of the remote display or remotely via RS-232/485.
- The relays can respond to any of eight
serially transmitted control characters. These can be generated by a
Laureate meter, counter or timer, thereby assuring that the local and remote alarm points are
identical.
